Alphonso Davies’ agent confirms they had several discussions in January with Real Madrid
Bayern Munich player Alphonso Davies signed a contract extension until 2030 early in February, putting to an end a saga that spanned over 18 months and always seemed to be headed towards the Canadian’s departure to Real Madrid. It is absurd how many times it was reported that Real Madrid had already agreed a deal with Davies, but that is because they were indeed a ‘serious option’ for Davies, as per his agent Nick Househ: “There were always discussions with several clubs, and of course, Real Madrid was one of them,” the founder of ATG Sports Management told journalist Ismael Mahmoud, via @iMiaSanMia. “But in the end, there was no signed agreement or commitment to any club, as we left the door open for the player to evaluate all options himself.
Real Madrid was indeed a serious option, and we had discussions with them, just as we did with other clubs. But in the end, a decision had to be made, and it was to stay at Bayern Munich. Of course, with full respect to Real Madrid, which is a massive club, one of the most decorated in history. It’s always an honor for any player to receive an offer from such a club, just as it is with Bayern Munich or other top Premier League clubs.
But ultimately, we had to make a decision, and it was initially a tough one because we weren’t sure what would happen with Bayern Munich, and the player was aware of that. So, he remained open to all options on the table.”
So when did Davies’ camp last speak with Real Madrid? “We had discussions with them in January, along with three other European clubs, and Real Madrid was definitely one of them,” Househ confirms, via @iMiaSanMia.
Three other European clubs? Which ones could they be? Manchester United and FC Barcelona were also linked with Davies, so perhaps they were two of the aforementioned three. Mahmoud takes the bait and asks if Barcelona were interested: “There was interest from some Spanish clubs, but as you know, there were only a few clubs we actually spoke with—maybe three or four. Some clubs asked us to keep the negotiations confidential, and I respected that,” Househ explains, via @iMiaSanMia.
But in the Premier League, there was interest from two or three clubs, as well as in Spain. However, the player’s options were limited. Only around five clubs showed genuine interest in signing him. When you’re moving from a club like Bayern Munich, you don’t have many big options because you’re already at one of the best clubs in the world. If you look at the top clubs, Bayern is among the very best.”
Despite the long process and many interested parties, Davies eventually chose to stay in Bavaria.
