Reporter Slammed For Asking Lucy Bronze Love Island Question at Women’s Euros

A reporter has been slammed for asking an ‘offensive’ question to Lucy Bronze - one they’d ‘never ask a male footballer’ - ahead of England’s dramatic penalty shootout victory over Sweden in the Women’s European Championship quarter-final on Thursday night.

The Lionesses were 2-0 down at half-time, but a late surge saw the defending champions claw their way into the final four. Bronze kickstarted the comeback with a goal in the 79th minute, before Arsenal teenager Michelle Agyemang equalised just two minutes later to take the game into extra time. With no goals scored in the additional period, the match was decided by a tense penalty shootout - featuring nine misses - before Euro 2020 hero Chloe Kelly ultimately sealed the win.

After a slow start to the tournament, England have now shown why they remain among the favourites for next month’s title. Heading into Thursday’s clash, their focus was undoubtedly solely on football. Yet one reporter chose that moment to ask Bronze a question about Love Island - a move that sparked immediate backlash for its irrelevance and perceived sexism.

England manager Sarina Wiegman was equally taken aback

Bronze appeared puzzled when a reporter in the room asked her about Love Island, leaving fans outraged on social media. "We know that Love Island has been part of the breakfast chatter," the reporter began, as Bronze glanced to her right, where Wiegman was seated. "Just curious to find out who you think would do well in the villa out of the squad and why."

After letting out a curious laugh, Bronze looked to her manager, who responded, as per Daily Mail: "I have no idea what you're talking about." Bronze then asked: "Do you want me to say a player?" to which Wiegman replied: "No." The veteran defender then concluded: "Not me, that's for sure." Watch 3:40 of the YouTube video below:

While some fans saw the funny side of things, others suggested the same sort of questions would not be fired the way of a male player in the same situation. "What a silly question,' one fan posted on X," while another questioned:

"Why don't you ever ask male players these questions?"

A third X user also concluded: "Glad to see mature and serious journalism at this major tournament. Really helping to build respect and grow the game."

England will be back in action on Tuesday when they face Italy in the semi-final. It marks the Lionesses’ third consecutive appearance at this stage of the competition. On the other side of the bracket, the winner of Friday evening’s Spain vs Switzerland clash will go on to face the victor of the Germany vs France matchup.
