Minister vows to wipe out drug trafficking in prisons
Indonesian Immigration and Corrections Minister Agus Andrianto reaffirmed his ministry's commitment to eradicating narcotics trafficking within prisons and detention centers.
He stated that various concrete measures are being taken to tighten supervision and close loopholes for drug distribution inside these facilities.
"We are committed to taking action without exception. Any officer found to be involved will face strict sanctions, including legal prosecution," he emphasized in a statement in Jakarta
According to him, the steps that have been taken include strengthening technology-based security systems through the installation of integrated CCTV cameras and increasing inspections in collaboration with law enforcement agencies.
Furthermore, he continued, enforcing discipline and officer integrity remains a top priority.
He revealed that several officers have already faced severe disciplinary action, including dismissal, for their involvement in drug trafficking.
In addition, a number of inmates identified as drug lords or high-risk offenders have been transferred to the Nusakambangan high-security prison island.
"The transfers of drug lords and high-risk offenders have so far reached 2,284 people," he noted.
He explained that the move serves two purposes, first, removing the "ringleaders" to cleanse prisons and detention centers from drug transactions and interactions.
Secondly, it serves as a rehabilitative measure for the high-risk inmates, intended to help them reflect on their actions and engage in correctional programs.
The minister asserted that his ministry continues to bolster correctional programs, including rehabilitation and personal development programs, in collaboration with various government institutions and non-governmental organizations (NGOs).
He underscored that addressing drug circulation within prisons and detention centers is complex, thereby requiring a thorough and collaborative handling. Thus, he affirmed that his institution is open to input and discussions to enhance its efforts.
Andrianto stated that the ministry is constantly carrying out evaluations and improvements to ensure prisons and detention centers are safe environments, free from narcotics, and supportive of the social reintegration process for inmates.
