Donald Trump makes questionable comment after USA wins at FIFA World Cup

United States President Donald Trump's initial public response to the U.S. World Cup triumph over Paraguay has sparked discussion among soccer enthusiasts about whether one element of his statement was overly complimentary.

Although he did not attend the game in Los Angeles, California, Trump commended the USMNT's commanding 4-1 win at SoFi Stadium through a Truth Social post. Trump offered congratulations to the Americans for securing three points in their opening match and complimented their opponents.

It comes just days after a lip reader revealed Trump's desperate 8-word plea as he was brutally booed at the New York Knicks game.

Congratulations to Team USA on their Big Win, 4-1, over a very good Paraguay team. Keep it going! President DJT," Trump wrote. The President skipped the match after being pitilessly booed out of Madison Square Garden during Game 3 of the NBA Finals.

Trump's statement was well-received until the final portion where he characterized Paraguay as a "very good team."

Although Paraguay earned World Cup qualification and arrived at the tournament in decent form, few analysts considered them one of the competition's stronger sides going into the event.

Paraguay came into the World Cup positioned 35th among participating countries and held a worldwide FIFA ranking of 41 out of 48 competing nations. They sit below squads including the No.

15-ranked United States, Japan, Mexico, South Korea, Switzerland, and Denmark. Their recent track record includes a 4-0 triumph over Nicaragua in June, wins against Greece, Mexico, and Peru last year, and defeats to Morocco and South Korea prior to the USA World Cup loss

Team USA also secured a 2-1 victory over Paraguay in a November 2025 friendly match.

Paraguay earned its World Cup berth by claiming the final sixth-place position in the South American CONMEBOL qualifiers, finishing eight points clear of Bolivia. The nation relied heavily on its defensive prowess, conceding just 10 goals throughout the 18-match qualifying campaign.

Attacking numbers entering the tournament hardly screamed 'very good. ' No squad member netted more than one goal during the three international friendlies preceding the competition.

Diego Gomez, MLS star Miguel Almiron, Matias Galarza, Alexandro Maidana, Alejandro Romero Gamarra, and Gustavo Caballero all shared the team's top scoring position. Just three players recorded an assist during that stretch.

An own goal by Paraguayan midfielder Damian Bobadilla sparked America's offensive surge and proved to be the turning point that gave the United States a lead they maintained throughout. Folarin Balogun added two more goals before Gio Reyna's clincher in extra time.

Reyna's goal occurred simultaneously with a livestream spectator's failed attempt to storm onto the field, which was called the worst attempt in sports history. The President's remarks came after FOX analyst Alexi Lalas, who called Trump the "soccer president" and praised his World Cup promotion.

The ex-USMNT player said no other administration embraced soccer more, despite Trump not attending the game.
