Fox News halted for breaking alert as Donald Trump completely loses it at reporter
Fox News interrupted their regular programming to broadcast Donald Trump's press briefing at the White House, during which he once again shouted at a female journalist.
The president erupted during the live broadcast, unleashing his anger at CNN reporter Kristen Holmes. The tense moment took place as Trump answered questions before his dramatic outburst.
During the heated confrontation in the Oval Office on Monday, August 17, the 80-year-old president repeatedly told the female journalist to "be quiet" and called her a "fake reporter" while in the presence of a 16-year-old boy. Holmes' CNN colleagues have since rallied around her in support. It comes after Trump's son Eric launched into an angry tirade about the president's "diaper nurse."
Trump's explosive moment with Holmes happened as the president hosted lifeguard Ryder Williams at the White House following his heroic rescue of 10-year-old Nathaniel Rai from dangerous waves off the California coastline last month. The president also welcomed Rai, who had been dragged approximately 15 yards (13.7m) from shore before Williams reached him, with multiple beachgoers assisting in the rescue effort.
The press briefing came after Trump's announcement that he would present Williams with a "High Civilian Honor" for his bravery. Trump invited the press to ask questions at the event, before he focused on CNN's Kristen Holmes.
"Quiet. Quiet. Quiet. You're very disrespectful in front of this young man, okay? Don't you find her disrespectful? He understands," Trump said before repeatedly ordering Kristen to stop speaking.
He then addressed the teenager directly, asking whether he also considered the reporter disrespectful. Trump asked Holmes, "Who are you with?" To which she replied, "CNN."
"Fake news," he bit back. "You're a loud, boisterous person. You're fake news." Trump completely lost his composure, repeatedly snapping, "Be quiet. Be quiet. You're a fake reporter and you report fake news."
When a second journalist raised questions about widely-circulated reports of deteriorating conditions aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln following nine months without being able to dock, the president brushed off the concerns, declaring, "It was fake news reporting from CNN."
CNN has stood by Holmes following Trump's outburst. A CNN Spokesperson shared with The Mirror US, "Kristen Holmes is one of the most respected and accomplished journalists covering the White House. This afternoon, she did her job and asked the President of the United States a tough, relevant, and newsworthy question on behalf of the American people."
They continued, "Public officials are free to challenge reporting they disagree with, but personal attacks on journalists for asking questions are beneath the office and inconsistent with the principles of a free press. We stand firmly behind Kristen and reject these attacks in the strongest possible terms."
