Ange Postecoglou's furious Cristiano Ronaldo defense as Al-Nassr boss fires back at journalist

 Ange Postecoglou engaged in a tense exchange with a Saudi journalist who suggested that Cristiano Ronaldo has recently contributed 'nothing' to Al-Nassr. The Australian has been at the helm of the Middle Eastern club since the summer.

However, recent results haven't met expectations. Al-Nassr are third in the Saudi Pro League after seven games, while they also suffered a 4-0 defeat to Emirati club Al Ain in the Asian Champions League during the week.

The situation became particularly contentious between Postecoglou and a Saudi reporter following the loss. During the post-match press conference, a journalist questioned the former Tottenham Hotspur manager, via The Mirror: "Ronaldo's presence has become... I will not say a burden because he is a respected player with a great history, but his presence does not benefit the team, particularly in matches."

Postecoglou appeared surprised by those remarks and responded: "Cristiano has scored three goals already, and he had limited preparation.

"This is not about the players. The players are giving everything. They are top players and they have great character. The responsibility is mine, okay?

"You shouldn't say that about somebody who is still setting an example for everyone. You should be careful when you say things like that about people who have built a career by making all the sacrifices required to keep playing.

"As I said, you can criticize me. No problem. That's okay. Did he not score in the last three games? Did he not have chances today?"

The journalist then stated: "In the last three matches, he did nothing," prompting Postecoglou to respond: "He did nothing? You're watching a different game to me."

Ronaldo, now 41, has represented Al-Nassr since his dramatic departure from Manchester United in 2022. During his tenure, he has netted 132 goals for the club, while also contributing to their Saudi Pro League championship triumph last season under Portuguese manager Jorge Jesus.

Their defense of that crown will resume following the international window when they face Diriyah. Prior to that, Ronaldo is expected to feature for Portugal as they navigate a demanding schedule.

Ronaldo's previous Al-Nassr manager Jesus now leads the national side and is anticipated to announce his inaugural roster this week. He will then oversee his debut match as Portugal boss when they meet Wales in their UEFA Nations League curtain-raiser, followed by an encounter with Denmark and two meetings with Norway.
