RI welcomes China support for Consulate-General in Chengdu

Foreign Affairs Minister Sugiono has thanked the Chinese government for supporting the opening of an Indonesian Consulate-General (KJRI) in Chengdu.

“We express our gratitude for the support from the Chinese government in the process of opening the KJRI Chengdu. We hope the opening of this Consulate-General will strengthen our economic cooperation amidst the current turmoil,” he said at the Diaoyutai State Guesthouse

He made the remarks during the first 2+2 ministerial meeting between Indonesia and China. The meeting was also joined by Defense Minister Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, and Chinese Defense Minister Dong Jun.

Sugiono stated that the opening of the Consulate-General in Chengdu will be finalized in 2025 as part of efforts to enhance diplomatic missions and services for Indonesian citizens in southwest China.

During the meeting, Sugiono and Wang also signed a memorandum of understanding on the establishment of a comprehensive strategic dialogue (CSD) focused on five pillars of cooperation, namely economy, people-to-people relations, maritime affairs, politics, and security.

The two countries also agreed to strengthen cooperation in law enforcement, including mutual legal assistance, intelligence sharing, and joint operations to combat transnational crime, cybercrime, and extremism.

They further agreed to establish a new bilateral consultation mechanism in the areas of disarmament, non-proliferation, and arms control.

In addition, Indonesia and China decided to boost maritime cooperation, including through enhanced coordination between the Indonesian Maritime Security Agency (Bakamla) and the China Coast Guard.

“Maritime cooperation must benefit the people and contribute to regional maritime security,” Sugiono said.

Besides attending the 2+2 Dialogue, Sugiono also held a bilateral meeting with Minister Wang to discuss follow-up cooperation on economic development and health.

“I encourage economic cooperation between Indonesia and China to focus not only on numbers, but also on capacity building, technology transfer, and sustainability,” he added.
